TILDON - WIRE HANGER SCULPTURE

I decided that since I've been out of of the studio all week and unable to even think about being creative after working a slew of 12 hour days I would post some work that I have hanging around the apartment.

This one is another wire hanger sculpture of my dog Tildon. It's a pretty stationary pose with a few curious details so I'm posting shots from both sides and the one from the front on an angle. In case you're wondering, he's a Jack Russell Terrier or "Parsons Russell Terrier" if you're into the new, official breed name.

RECYCLED HORSE PARTS

I made this horse a few years ago when I was obsessed with using recycled materials and over the years I've added various accessories. Most recently I did my research and essentially constructed a "working" saddle for him. He also has a winners wreath that usually doubles as a holiday wreath so he proudly displays it for a few weeks around the holidays.

NO MORE WIRE HANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!

As part of my job as a human being who likes to recycle things from the trash, I've discovered that my artwork translates rather easily to using wire hangers. As you can imagine here in the city, there is always a fresh supply of wire hangers that people throw out from their dry-cleaning. Over the years, I've turned them into, horses, rabbits, bugs, skulls, pumpkins and all kinds of Christmas ornaments but my favorite subject matter for these wire sculptures is my dog Tildon. I've been visualizing this piece for a while now and decided it was time to actually break out the wire cutters and get to work. Part of the challenge is that I like to restrict myself to using only 1 wire hanger per sculpture. In a piece that i have no idea how much wire I may or may not use like this one, I completely bend out the entire wire hanger including the hooked and twisted together parts. They don't always work and most of them include a few re-bent sections, but when they do work out, they look like this.

TOM THE TURKEY SAYS - THANKS FOR NOT EATING ME THIS YEAR

A few years ago a friend of mine in North Carolina had a turkey that she had raised from a baby who as he grew up became quite accustomed to following her around the yard and if you weren't careful into the house as well. He became much more than the turkey that he was.

She also had a number of large dogs who weren't to keen on Tom The Turkey moving in on their turf...... End of story.

So I created this piece in memory of Tom.

THE DAY IN BOSTON

I spent the day yesterday setting up for an event in Boston at the Elie Tahari store in Copley Plaza. The event was promoting Peace Games and was sponsored by Vanity Fair but the true highlight of the trip for me was getting to the mall and finding these 2 beautiful found metal sculptures by Deborah Butterfield. I had discovered them the last time I was in Boston but didn't have my camera, so this time around I was armed with my new camera and planned on getting few shots. The 2 pieces here are amazing, (despite the crap visible in the background), but if you want to see even more incredible Deborah Butterfield horse sculptures you should do a google image search. She works in all kinds of materials including cast bronze of horses created from branches that are breathtaking.
